This article provides smartphone options to authenticate with in Duo Mobile app. Users who have installed and activated the app on their cell phones can authenticate by accepting a push notification.

Context

Users who have installed and activated the Duo Mobile app on their cell phones can authenticate by accepting a push notification, which is much quicker and easier than using the Phone or SMS authentication methods. The Duo Mobile app also allows you to authenticate using generated login codes, which works even if your device is not connected to the Internet.

Activating Duo Mobile

If you do not have Duo Mobile installed and activated, follow these instructions to set it up.

  • Using a desktop computer (not a phone), navigate to Office.com or Galaxy
  • Log in using your UTD credentials. This will open the Duo authentication page.
  • Select Duo Mobile, instead of an authentication method. 
    • You may need to confirm your identity by using one of the options listed on the page- Text message passcode or Phone call.

  • You will then be directed to Download Duo Mobile on your mobile device.
    • Select Next after you have downloaded the application.

  • Open the app in your mobile device and scan the QR code shown in the next page.
    1. To scan the QR code select the Add  button located on the right corner in Duo Mobile.
    2. Click on Use QR code to open your camera on the app.
    3. Scan code shown on your desktop.

  • You have now Added Duo Mobile, select Continue
    • If the device you have added does not have a mobile number (tablet), you will now have the Text or phone call options.

Authenticating via Duo Push

  • To authenticate with Duo using push notification, select Duo Push on the authentication screen.

  • You will see a screen with the title "Check for a Duo Push". 
    • In this screen you can see the name/number of the device the Duo Push has been sent to.
    • If you have more than one device with the Duo Mobile app, select the Other options link to choose another device.

  • Open the Duo app on your mobile device to see the Push notification and select Approve

Authenticating via Login Code

Duo Mobile can generate login codes for authentication even when your phone is not connected to the Internet.

  • Open the Duo Mobile app and find the “University of Texas at Dallas” protected login.
  • Click on Show to see the passcode.
  • Select Refresh passcode to generate another login code.

  • To use the code, go back to your browser and select Duo Mobile Passcode.

  • Click on Verify to authenticate.

Duo
Duo is the university two-factor authentication method designed to add a second layer of security to your NetID account. Verifying your identity using a second factor, such as your phone or a security key, prevents anyone but you from logging in, even if they know your password.
