NAC (Network Access Control) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The following are frequently asked questions for the Network Access Control that will go live in January 2024. 

  1. I'm a faculty/staff member with an office on campus and use a personal machine to connect to the University provided dock in my office. How do I get connected?
    • You will be connected automatically to the Internet.  If you require access to specific University resources you may be required to install the SecureConnect agent. 
    • Connect to the University Wireless System.
    • Install the SecureConnect agent so that the device can be monitored for vulnerabilities and to verify the device meets University guidelines. 
  2. How do I get my University owned linux device connected to the wired network?
    • You will be connected automatically to the Internet.  If you require access to specific University resources you may be required to install the SecureConnect agent. 
    • Connect to the University Wireless System.
    • Install the SecureConnect agent so that the device can be monitored for vulnerabilities and to verify the device meets University guidelines. 
  3. How do I connect if I don't want an agent running on my device?
    • You will be connected automatically to the Internet.  If you require access to specific University resources you may be required to install the SecureConnect agent. 
    • Connect to the University Wireless System.
  4. How do I get the NAC agent (ForeScout SecureConnector) on my University owned device?
    • Agent should already be on your University owned device but if it’s not then please contact your support team for assistance. 
  5. I have a student that uses my lab.  They connect their personal device to the wired network.  How do they get connected?
    • You will be connected automatically to the Internet.  If you require access to specific University resources you may be required to install the SecureConnect agent. 
    • Connect to the University Wireless System.
    • Install the SecureConnect agent so that the device can be monitored for vulnerabilities and to verify the device meets University guidelines. 
  6. What advantage does the NAC provide over the MAC registration process in Infoblox?
    • With accuracy and speed, the NAC analyzes the network to identify, evaluate, and monitor network endpoints and applications, as well as determine the device's operating system, configuration, software, services, patch state, and presence of security agents.
  7. Why is UTD using a NAC?
    • Primary benefit to using a NAC is network monitoring which allows us to keep our campus safe by monitoring for connected devices that are not in compliance and pose a risk to other University resources.
  8. How does the NAC impact me?
    • In the event that your computer doesn't meet the compliance standards, your computer may be put in a remedial state which allows you or your IT Technical support person to bring your computer back into compliance. 
  9. If I get blocked, what is the best way to get unblocked?
    • Contact your support team for assistance
