The Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming how higher education institutions operate, creating smarter campuses, enhancing student experiences, and improving research capabilities. These devices require compatibility with the existing campus wireless network to connect.
- Registration: All IoT devices must be registered with the IT department before being connected to the network, providing necessary details such as MAC address, device purpose, and location.
- Security Compliance: Devices must meet campus cybersecurity standards, including secure authentication, data encryption, and regular firmware updates.
- Bandwidth Usage: IoT devices must not consume excessive network bandwidth or interfere with the performance of other critical campus services.
- Monitoring: The institution reserves the right to monitor network traffic from IoT devices to ensure compliance with policies and address potential security risks.
Devices directly supporting research projects, experiments, or academic studies. These include:
- IoT sensors, controllers, and data acquisition tools used in labs and field studies
- Specialized research equipment like drones, robotics, and wearables
- Custom-built IoT prototypes designed for innovation and R&D
These devices are allowed under the following conditions:
- Devices must adhere to the institution's cybersecurity protocols (e.g., proper encryption, secure communication channels).
- A clear description of the research purpose and compliance with applicable data privacy laws (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA) is required.
- Devices must comply with low-bandwidth and power-efficient standards to avoid network congestion.
Devices directly supporting research projects, experiments, or academic studies. These include:
- Smart lighting, HVAC, and building control systems
- Security devices like smart cameras, door access controls, and motion sensors
These devices are allowed under the following conditions:
- Devices must be registered with campus IT and facility management teams to ensure proper integration with existing systems.
- Only institution-approved brands and models should be used to ensure compatibility and security.
- Sensors should not interfere with personal privacy; data collection must comply with institutional privacy policies.
Personal smart devices such as fitness trackers, smart speakers, and home automation systems are not permitted on the campus network, except where explicitly approved for research or educational purposes.
At this time, student-owned IoT devices (e.g., smart home devices, personal assistants, gaming devices) are not supported on the campus IoT network. This may change in the future as our infrastructure expands.
Currently, IoT support is only offered to faculty and staff members. To request a service, please create an Atlas ticket and provide the following information:
- MAC address for the device
- A description of the device and its intended use
- Number f devices needing connection
- Location where the device will be deployed
