FAQs

What is e-Recycling/e-Waste?

E-waste is electronic products that are unwanted, not working, and nearing or at the end of their “useful life”. E-Recycling is the reuse or reprocessing of electronics that have been discarded.

What’s Accepted for e-Recycling?

Personal computers, laptops, computer monitors, printers, keyboards, computer mice, fax machines, photocopiers, televisions, VCRs, DVD and Blue Ray players, stereos, speakers, home and office phones, cell phones, and consumer electronics.

What’s Not Accepted for e-Recycling?

UTD-owned products are not accepted. Users with UTD-owned products are to contact the Campus Facility to discard devices. Users with personal products too large to fit in a bin are encouraged to contact sustainability@utdallas.edu or Recycling@utdallas.edu for their contactless drop-off location.

How Are e-waste Items Recycled?

Waste Management (WM) is an R2 Certified entity, and data management procedures are strictly governed under the certification. The process includes:

  • DOD compliant data wiping
  • Department of Defense compliant electronic media erasure (DoD 5220.22-M) or physical hard drive destruction
  • Shredding
  • Purge by overwriting, block erase, or cryptographic erase
  • Degaussing
  • Disintegrate
  • Pulverize
  • Melt
  • Incinerate
  • Data Destruction at your location
  • Where is the bin located?

Where Is the Bin Located?

Bin is located in the TechBar back office. Please walk up to the Tech. Bar and let an employee know you are here to drop off items to recycle.

Where Else Can Others Drop Off e-waste to be Recycled?

Email Sustainability at sustainability@utdallas.edu for their contactless drop-off location.
