What Is It?
Sympa is a mailing list system that is designed to contact small or large groups of internal or external email addresses. Sympa is the supported system for bulk email, meaning any message is destined for more than 500 recipients. OIT still encourages departments sending mass communications to follow the Office of Communications Mass Email Process.
Sympa can be used for student organizations. In that case, the faculty/staff sponsor for the student organization should submit the request for the list, and from there, they can add subscribers and/or other individuals to be co-owners/co-moderators of the list.
With departmental lists, it is possible to have Sympa lists be auto-populated. To do so, we will need to know at least one of the following:
- Department ID
- Sponsor/owner
- Student ACAD PLAN (major)
- Account type
Once the feed for the Sympa list is established using some variation of the above criteria, the subscribers for the Sympa list will be updated 3 times daily.
Sympa lists can be configured in a variety of ways, but these two are the most common and useful:
- Announcement: generally only notices go out. Subscriber posts are moderated. Only the owner/moderator can post to the list.
- Discussion: owners and subscribers alike can post to the list.
