How to Create a CometAI Prompt Template

Overview

A Prompt Template is a reusable structure that simplifies the creation of AI-generated responses for common tasks. Users will be able to define variable placeholders - such as audience, tone, or topic - that can be quickly customized each time the prompt is used.

By using templates, users can streamline repetitive tasks like drafting emails or creating social media posts, reducing the need to rewrite similar prompts and improving workflow efficiency.

Instructions

  • Open CometAI in your favorite web browser.
  • On the left column, go to Assistants Tab, then select Prompt Template.
    • The "Prompt Template" window will appear.

2Prompt Template — create a new reusable prompt template
  • Provide a name and a brief description for the template.

1Name — label used to identify this prompt template
2Description — explains what this template does
  • Select Default Instructions from the Custom Instructions drop-down .
    • Unlike the main prompt, which is used once per execution, Custom Instructions are repeated throughout the conversation to keep responses consistent.

  • Scroll down to the "Prompt" text box and enter a prompt that is frequently used and detailed as needed:
    • Identify the words or phrases that will be changed during every use, also known as variables.
    • Then place brackets around each variable wherever customization is needed ( e.g. {{sender}}, {{topic}}, {{tone}}, or {{audience}} ).
Examples of a Basic and Detailed prompt:

Basic Prompt:
Respond to an email from {{sender}} regarding {{topic}} in a tone that is {{tone}} and suitable for {{audience}}.
Detailed Prompt:
Write a professional email to {{recipient type}} regarding {{technical issue or topic}}. Begin with a greeting appropriate for {{formality level}}. In the first paragraph, briefly explain the context of {{issue/topic}} and its impact. In the second paragraph, outline the steps taken or recommended actions, using clear and concise language. Close with a summary and offer further assistance if needed. Use a {{tone}} tone and ensure the message is suitable for {{audience type}}.
  • Below the "Prompt" text box is a list of variables that CometAI identified (Please skip this step if you have not listed any variable in your Prompt).
    • Clicking on each variable will provide additional features that can help customize the generated text and how the template reacts to input.
      • Optional: Identifies this variable as optional if you do not provide information.
      • Line Numbers: Adds numbers to each line.
      • Escape: Removes double symbols like quotes or new lines.
      • Truncate: Limits the number of generated text characters at the beginning.
      • Truncate from End: Limits the number of generated text characters at the end.
      • Validate with Regular Expression: Checks if the text matches the provided expression.  If it does not, then you will not be able to submit the prompt.

1recipient type:text — the variable declared in your prompt using {{recipient}}
2Optional — allows the variable to be left blank
3Line Numbers — adds line numbers to the start of each line of text
4Escape — removes double quotes and newlines from the text
5Truncate — cuts the text off after a set number of characters
6Truncate from End — cuts the text off from the end instead of the start
7Save — applies these variable settings

Optional: Add Conversation Tags to organize, filter, and retrieve conversations more efficiently.  Tags can be used to connect to "Follow-Up Buttons" in conversations.

  • When complete, select Save to continue and the newly created template will appear in the right-hand column.

  • Select the template and a new window will open showing your custom template with text boxes for the words or phrases you had identified earlier as bracketed variables.
    • Provide additional information in each text box and click Submit when finished.

3recipient type* — required variable filled with 'temoc'
4technical issue or topic* — required variable describing the issue
5formality level* — required variable setting the tone of the response
6issue/topic* — required variable identifying who the issue involves
  • A new conversation will begin using the selected AI model and the chosen template.
    • CometAI will start the conversation by generating a draft that includes the template structure, leaving additional bracketed variables that it provided (Ex. [Your name]).
      • To complete the draft, reply to CometAI with the specific information for each variable.
      • In the image below we identified [Your name] as Joe Smith.

Disclaimer: Prompt Templates, are currently stored locally on the user’s browser/device, regardless of conversation storage or sync settings. As a result, these features do not automatically synchronize across different browsers or devices. If users want to reuse them when switching browsers or devices, they should save their prompt template and instructions externally (for example, in a Word document) and recreate them as needed. This is a known issue, and the CometAI team is actively working to address it in a future release.
