How to Connect Linux to CometNet

CometNet on Gnome (Ubuntu & Fedora)

This desktop environment is most common, and is used in Linux distributions such as Ubuntu and Fedora by default.

Note: For specific steps on connecting to a WPA2 Enterprise secured network on another distribution, please refer to the applicable documentation.
  • Open Wi-Fi Settings.
  • Select CometNet (or CometNet_Legacy).

List of Wi-Fi options available in the network.

  • Enter the Network Settings as outlined in CometNet Connection Settings- Article | Atlas Portal (also noted below). 
    • EAP method: PEAP
    • (If asked) Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPV2
    • CA certificate: Use system certificates
    • (If asked) Online Certificate Status: Do not verify
    • Domain: utdallas.edu or CAMPUS
    • Identity or Username: Your NetID
      • If you face issues connecting with your NetID, please use your NetID@utdallas.edu.
    • Password: Your NetID password
Note: An "Anonymous identity" is not required. This field may be left blank.

Note: If you're running into issues connecting, try restarting the device once you've inputted the information above. 

CometNet on KDE

KDE is an alternative desktop environment to Gnome. It is used in Kubuntu, SteamOS, and many Arch distributions.

CometNet with NetworkManager (nmtui)

Network manager is frequently used in distributions without a traditional desktop environment such as Arch and NixOS.

  • Run `nmtui`
  • Select Edit a connection.

  • Select Add to add a new connection profile.

  • Enter the settings as shown.
  • Select OK when completed.
Note: Choose your specific wi-fi adapter in your machine for "Device" by selecting Select and then selecting your wireless adapter.

  • Go back to the Menu.
  • Click on Activate a connection.
  • Select your newly created CometNet configuration > Activate.
