Azure OpenAI Service Onboarding Process

Requesting Access

Before requesting access to an Azure subscription for an OpenAI-enabled project, begin by considering your specific use case and think about which models would best suit your team's needs. Be sure to review the complete list of OpenAI language models that can be deployed within Azure OpenAI Service and take note of regional availability for each model to ensure your team can deploy in a specific region.

OIT-ECIS is available to discuss technical requirements and planning for University-affiliated deployments and can be reached by emailing OIT-ECIS@utdallas.edu.

Process

  • First complete the general procedure for cloud hosting requests by submitting the Request Cloud Hosting form to OIT ECIS.
    • You can find this form on Atlas, by following Services > Infrastructure > Cloud Infrastructure > Request (Cloud) Hosting. This form includes indication of a budget, cost center, project financial officer, usage agreements and technical owners.
  • After OIT ECIS approves your request and provides subscription access, log into the Azure Portal.
  • View your available subscriptions by searching "Subscriptions" in the top search bar.
    • If you cannot view your new subscription, make sure to deselect any filters (including global filtering) on the list.
    • Once you can view the subscription, click into it and view your subscription Overview.
  • On the over Overview page, you will find your subscription ID (copy this – you will need this to apply for OpenAI access), your account's role permissions, and key insights to manage the subscription's use over time.
  • After copying your subscription ID, apply for OpenAI services via the Request Access to Azure OpenAI Service form from Microsoft.
    • As noted by Microsoft's approval process, this service is only being offered to select enterprise customers and partners. All applications should be filed as under The University of Texas at Dallas as an MSP organization; this form is how Microsoft applies their vetting process and provides selective access to AI products.
  • Microsoft requires agreement to using OpenAI services in accordance with their usage policy and only within the specified use case on record. Additional use cases must be assessed by submitting another form for approval.
