NAC BYOD FAQs

FAQs

What is BYOD?

  • BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device.

What Happens if I Connect My Personal Laptop to the Wired University Network?

  • When you plug into the wired network and browse the internet, you will be brought to a Captive Portal webpage.
    • On the Captive Portal webpage, you can either sign-in via your UTD credentials (NetID and password) or via Guest sign-in.
    • Visit KA 1306 for steps on logging in using your UTD credentials, or KA 1307 for Guest sign in instructions

What if I Get the Captive Portal Webpage Using a University Provided Laptop?

  • You will need to install the SecureConnect agent. Once installed, it will perform a compliance check on the laptop.
    • If it passes, you will be connected.
    • If it fails, one of two scenarios may happen:
      • If your University provided laptop is a month behind updates, you will receive a notification to update the device.
      • If your University provided laptop is two months or more behind updates, the device will be placed into a Service Zone.
        • In the Service Zone, your University provided laptop will have access to the internet, but will not have access to University Network Resources.
        • Once you update your University provided laptop, the SecureConnect agent will perform another compliance check on the device. If the laptop passes, the device will be removed from the Service Zone.
Important: If the SecureConnect agent is installed and your laptop meets compliance but still does not connect to University Network Resources, please reach out to your Local tech group.

What Type of Internet Access Will I Have With a “BYOD” Machine?

  • Guest Sign-in users will only have access to the internet.
  • AD Sign-in users who meet compliance, will have access to the internet and University Network Resources.
