Securing Personal Laptops

Best Practices

Use a Strong Password

  • Set up your Windows or Mac account with a strong password.
  • Ensure that the password is required every time you power on your laptop or when it exits hibernation, sleep, or screensaver mode.

Enable Automatic Updates

  • Regularly update your operating system and software.
  • Enable automatic updates to keep your laptop protected against known vulnerabilities.

Encrypt Your Hard Drive

  • Use full-disk encryption tools like BitLocker (for Windows) or FileVault (for macOS) to encrypt your hard drive.
  • This ensures that even if your laptop is stolen, the data remains secure.

Be Cautious with Downloads

Install a Firewall

  • Enable a firewall on your laptop to block unauthorized access. Firewalls help protect your device from external threats.

Use UTD VPN

  • When using public Wi-Fi networks, use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to enhance your online privacy.
  • UTD VPN is configured for split-tunnel, meaning only UTD traffic will traverse it.

Backup Your Files

  • Regularly back up your important files to an external drive or cloud storage. In case of laptop loss or theft, you won’t lose critical data.

Physically Protect Your Laptop

Check Privacy Settings

  • Review and adjust privacy settings on your laptop.
  • Limit access to personal information and ensure that only necessary apps have permission to access your data.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

  • Enable MFA for your personal accounts. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of authentication (such as a code from an app) in addition to your password.
  • University account and portals use DUO.
Important: While technical measures are essential, user behavior is equally crucial. Stay vigilant, be cautious with your online activities, and follow these best practices to keep your laptop secure!
