Purpose
This article has instructions for the backup and restoration of files in Code42.

Backup
Important Recommendations
By default, Code42 backs up your local user directory, which is fine for most users; however, you can change this to whatever you want.
- Back up only what you need. This excludes data on mapped drives.
- Do not back up Operating System files.
- Back up your default user folder, other important files, and folders on Code42.
- Use the wired UT Dallas network for the initial backup. Future incremental backups will run quicker over the wired network but will also run fine over wireless.
Code42 Backup
- Launch the Code42 client and log in with your NetID and Password.
- From the main page, select Manage Files...
- Check the box beside whichever files or folders you would like to back up and select Save.
- Your computer’s hard drives will be listed. (e.g., “C:/”)
- Your default user folder will be listed under “Users” and usually be labeled with your NetID.
- To see the contents of a folder, select that folder.
- Clicking the box to the left of your user folder will select (or un-select) all the contents of that folder and sub-folders.
Note: Excluding previously selected files results in excluded files being deleted from the backup archive. The now-excluded files will not be available for restoring.
- Your data will be backed-up automatically. Select Run backup now from the main window to manually initiate the backup.
- During backup, the remaining time will be shown under the progress bar.
- The backup will continue if you close the Code42 window.
- If your computer goes to sleep, Code42 will resume backup when it wakes up.
Code42 Restore
You may restore your data from the Code42 client. It is not possible to restore from another user’s account. If needed, an admin may also restore data for you.
