Explanation
Automatic External Forwarding and Exemptions
According to the Information Security Office, automatic forwarding of emails to a personal email account outside UT Dallas is dangerous and highly discouraged because the contents are exposed to Internet attackers and third-party email services with no contract with UT Dallas. For these reasons, automatic external email forwarding has been disabled.
If you have a particular reason to need this ability, you can check the procedure to submit an "Automated Email Forward to External Services" exemption request to the Information Security Office here.
Error Emailing Users with Automatic External Forwarding Set
If a user has external forwarding set without approval, other users may get a message when trying to email the user that reads:
"Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups:
LastName, FirstName (FirstName.LastName@UTDallas.edu).
Your message wasn't delivered because the recipient's email provider rejected it."
The Diagnostic information will also include a line that says, "Access denied. Your organization does not allow external forwarding."
If you get this message when trying to email another UTD email, the intended recipient will need to be contacted and directed to turn off their automatic forwarding. Depending on their forwarding settings, they may or may not have received the email you sent.
