Lab Access - Location Assignments

All windows computer labs are currently available for all ATCM enrolled students 23/7. We recommend using a remote device from the classroom your course is taught in, during the times that your course is taught. In-person classrooms will be locked at 10:00 PM on weekdays and will remain closed on weekends. Computers are scheduled for daily maintenance and will initiate forced restarts between 6:30 AM - 7:30 AM. Please conclude your remote session prior to 6:30 AM to avoid loss of data.  

All labs are accessible in-person during the week. Please be aware that remote access may be interrupted without warning. Utilize Box to save work online and easily access your files from any device. Please find a guide at the bottom of this page on how to access local storage while connected to the Remote Desktop computer for Windows 10.

The open computer lab (ATC 2.302) remains in-person only. 

If you are unable to access a remote classroom, please email techresources@utdallas.edu with your NetID, course prefix and number, and course section and we will review access eligibility.

Enroll in Duo, Two-factor Authentication

To make a connection to the VPN and remotely access a Windows machine, you will need to utilize Duo Two-Factor authentication, NetIDplus.

How to View Remote Accessible Windows Machines

  • Once connected to the VPN, please click here to view available lab equipment.  
  • Click on the lab you wish to use equipment from .
  • You will be redirected to a map of the equipment in the lab. 
    • Green > the computer is available for use  
    • Red > the computer is currently being used  
    • Blue > the computer is turned off, will be available the next day  
    • Gray > the computer is out of service 

How to Remotely Access a Windows Machine

Windows Devices on the UT Dallas domain can be accessed from another computer using Remote Desktop. Prerequisites for connecting via Remote Desktop:  

  • If off-campus, you must first be connected to the VPN. 
  • You must know the computer’s name or IP address. 
  • The computer must be online.
  • You must have authorization to log in remotely. 

Guidelines: 

  • At our discretion, we may disconnect idle sessions without notice if resources are limited.
  • Only one session is permitted at a time per user - Multiple concurrent sessions are subject to disconnect without notice. 
  • Save resources online often, connection interruptions may occur without warning and access to specific machines is not guaranteed. 
  • You must Sign Out when ending your session - Do Not Shut Down 
  • All connections will be reset daily between the hours 6:30 AM to 7:30 AM for maintenance. 
  • These guidelines are subject to change without notice based on usage requirements and collected metric.s 

Connection Instructions for Windows 10:

  • Click on a Windows icon from the map to reveal additional details. 
  • Select the IP address shown beneath the computer's name to download a remote desktop connection file.
  • Open the .rdp file.
  • Expand Show Options.
  • Enter your username as: campus\yourNetID.  
  • Click Connect and then enter your Password when prompted.  
  • When finished, select the Start Menu, select your Profile icon, and Sign Out.

Connection Instructions for Mac OS:

  • Download and open Microsoft Remote Desktop (available in the App Store).
  • Click on a Windows icon from the map to reveal additional details. 
  • Select the IP address shown beneath the computer's name to download a remote desktop connection file. 
  • Open the .rdp file with "Microsoft Remote Desktop".
  • Enter your username as: campus\yourNetID
  • Enter your Password when prompted.
  • Click Connect.
  • When finished, select the Start Menu, select your Profile icon, and Sign Out.

Utilizing Additional Features of Remote Desktop

There are additional configuration options available to enhance your experience while using remote desktop connection. Please find instructions below for enabling local storage, multi-monitor displays, and system audio. 

How to Access Local Storage While Connected to the Remote Desktop Computer for Windows 10:

  1. Open the .rdp file with "Remote Desktop Connection". 
  2. Select Show Options.
  3. Navigate to the Local Resources tab. 
  4. Select More... under the "Local devices and resources" section. 
  5. Expand Drives.
  6. Select the storage drive letter from your local computer that you would like accessible in the remote desktop for the duration of your session. 
  7. The connected drives will appear in "This PC" under the category "Redirected drives and folders". 

How To Enable Audio Over Remote Desktop for Windows 10:

  1. Open the .rdp file with "Remote Desktop Connection". 
  2. Select Show Options
  3. Navigate to the Local Resources tab. 
  4. Select Settings... under the "Remote Audio" section. 
  5. Verify Play on this computer is selected and press OK.

How to Enable All Monitors over Remote Desktop for Windows 10:

  1. Open the .rdp file with "Remote Desktop Connection". 
  2. Select Show Options.  
  3. Navigate to the Display tab. 
  4. Check the box next to "Use all my monitors for the remote sessions".
